I'm a serial memoirist (with my 2nd book of a trilogy to be published next spring). There's nothing I love reading more than other writers' memoirs & personal essays. I'm one of your readers who devour your posts the day they come out. I'll miss them on your hiatus.

Best of luck with your writing career...lord knows you deserve more well paid work.

Do what’s best for you, Hugo! I will definitely miss your posts but I do understand what you’re saying. As the good doctor would say, “take good care of yourself” and as I would say “FIGHT ON” Lots of love & support to you and on your journey forward.

Some of us who cheer you on do so because we see ourselves in you! In in the last few years of my knowing you through your writing, you have grown tremendously in the knowledge of how to best take care of yourself, which has helped me greatly, and for which I’m grateful. This choice to step away temporarily is another example. I love your writing & look forward to when you return but am happy to know that your absence is for the best purposes.

(“Purposes” or “purpose”? lol

I’m also keenly aware of my own shortcomings as a writer whenever I respond to your posts!)

Hugo,

As someone very new to Substack I don’t really know you. I’m looking forward to my remediation during your hiatus as it affords me some time to read your posts. There was something about the tone and quality of what I did read that captured my attention. As for approbation well I may have some thoughts to share down the road but for now please accept my humble thanks for writing from the heart.

Semper Fidelis, Hank

one more thought for you, this one from Catholic writer Henri Nouwen: "Dying is the most important act of living. It involves a choice to bind others with guilt or to set them free with gratitude. This choice is a choice between a death that gives life and a death that kills."
