On Saturday night, I offered up my own hierarchy of sins, naming schadenfreude as the very worst. A friend of my mother’s reads this Substack and offered a mild protest. Monika, speaking no doubt for many on the left, derives great satisfaction from contemplating Donald Trump in prison. “I want him to go to jail, but that’s a desire for justice, not schadenfreude.”
I read in this post, and many of yours, an effort at equivalency or both and, and I want to check to see if I'm imposing my view on your writing (how could I not, to some extent), or if I'm reading your intent relatively correctly. To paraphrase: The left wants Donald Trump in prison. The right wants Hillary Clinton in prison. These are basically the same. Do you really believe they're the same? Do you believe that the facts of the case are less important than how people feel about it? I'm hearing you say, "Each side feels like the other should be in prison, so we should give these equal weight." Is that what you mean? Thanks!
Is Suffering a Prerequisite for Justice? More on Schadenfreude
