Conservatives (another rubbery word, but not my topic today) often use “liberal” as code for those who support “big government expansion” or “moral decay.” Folks on the far left, meanwhile sneer at liberals for their timidity, their insufficient radicalism, and their inevitable and exasperating failure to grasp the urgency of the moment.
